April 16th, 2009

It seems they were already putting more fun into Windows in ‘95. How much fun would Windows be nowadays, like Vista or Windows 7 ?

What a great video clip about the advantages of using Windows !

Fat PSP back and shiny again !

October 29th, 2008

A few days ago I thought it was time to revive my (fat) PSP again. I hadn’t touched it for a while and a lot of updates have been published for the PSP firmware. Also some new games (FIFA Soccer 09, Pipe Mania, Midnight Club: LA Remix, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2009) have been released the last few months and I wanted to give them a try.

Of course I first wanted to update my PSP firmware to the (latest) version 5.00. But, as always, upgrading a downgraded PSP takes a few more steps than an original unmodified game console.  At the moment Sony has already pushed out firmware version 5.01

The upcoming days I will add another guide which explain which PSP’s can be downgraded. There will also be downgrade guides in PDF, which take you through each step, depending on your current firmware.

Also YouTube has some great videos of people cleaning their PSP’s….

OV-chipkaart – De Tram

March 9th, 2008

iPhone Updated to 1.1.3 !

February 27th, 2008

A few days ago I decided to update my iPhone (1.1.2 OTB) to the last firmware 1.1.3. No only because with 1.1.3 you can pinpoint your location using cell tower information, but most of all because you can send an SMS message to multiple contacts. (yes, I know: this feature is already availlable on 85% of the cell phones….) The new features for version 1.1.3 are (as far as I know):

  • The ability to send an SMS message to multiple people is now there
  • Google Maps application can now pinpoint your location using cell tower triangulation
  • Google Maps can now display the Hybrid map view
  • You can now drag and drop application icons on your home screen
  • The home screen supports pagination
  • You can now add web bookmarks to your home screen
  • Gmail IMAP support added to Mail
  • Movie chapters support
  • Song lyrics support
  • Use Gift Cards in the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store

So, that was the easy part, but now for the hard part: how to get from an iPhone 1.1.2 OTB (out-of-the-box) unlocked with TurboSIM to the new 1.1.3 (probably without TurboSIM) ? Well, just download ZiPhone and use this excellent tutorial from iClarified.

I followed the steps and only the ’scary’ thing was the message of ZiPhone saying “ERROR: ziphone returned 1“, after activating, jailbreaking and unlocking. It sounded quite bad, so I checked the jailbreak and SSH status using iNdependence (1.4 beta 3) and found that my iPhone was activated, but not jailbroken and SSH was not installed (at least, according to iNdependence). Somehow something went wrong in the activate-jailbreak-unlock-process (AJU-process), but all major functions appeared to be working. Making phone calls, sending text messages, Safari worked, etc. Ok, probably nothing to worry, next step:

The BSD Subsystem installed fine, but I couldn’t connect to my iPhone from FuGu or Cyberduck. After trying to connect from the console, I got a warning saying “Remote host identification has been changed”. It appeared that the RSA host key for my iPhone had been changed (because of the update ?), so I deleted my known_hosts file and retried. Problem solved, a new key was generated and added to the new (auto-generated) known_hosts file.

Well, that was it. In the end, it took about an hour because of solving the RSA host key thing. ZiPhone really did the trick, what an excellent tool !!! I also donated some euros to the developer, his dedication and speed of releasing this quality tool is amazing. Thanks Zibri !!

And how about this retro-looking screenshot of ZiPhone unlocking my iPhone ? It reminds me of the good old DOS / Linux days !!!
